Getting in touch

One address for everything: hello@saimox.com. Bugs, questions, licence trouble, feature requests.

If something is broken, tell us four things

  • Which device and which version of iOS or macOS
  • The app version — it is at the bottom of the Info tab
  • What you did, and what happened instead
  • Whether it happens every time or only sometimes

The last one matters more than it sounds. A fault that happens every time is usually found in an hour; one that happens sometimes can take a week, and knowing which it is saves that week.

saimox Player

What is an SMX package?

A single file holding many separate sounds, each with its own position in the room and its own movement over time. A player puts them where they belong instead of replaying a fixed stereo or surround mix. The format is open and free to use.

Do I need special headphones?

No. Any headphones work — the app folds every object to two ears itself. AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and similar add head tracking, which keeps the sound stage still while you turn your head.

Head tracking does nothing

Three things have to be true: the headphones must have motion sensors, head tracking must be switched on in the player, and motion access must be allowed. If you refused the motion question once, iOS never asks again — turn it back on in the system settings under Privacy & Security, Motion & Fitness.

Over AirPlay it is switched off deliberately. With a second or two of buffering the room would turn visibly later than your head, and that is worse than no tracking at all.

A large piece takes a moment to start

A piece with a hundred or more objects needs every voice started at the same instant, and setting up that many takes a second or two. It is the price of keeping them locked together — a stagger of a tenth of a second between voices carrying related material is clearly audible.

Pieces with a handful of objects start immediately.

The phone gets warm

Every object is filtered separately for each ear. A hundred objects is a hundred of those, sixty times a second. Closing the space monitor when you are not watching it helps most; the picture is the second largest cost after the sound itself.

Sound and loudness

Everything sounds quieter than my other apps

Folding many channels to two ears without attenuation clips reliably, so the app reduces by a fixed amount that depends on how many there are. It is the same amount saimox Studio uses, so a piece sounds the same in both.

The volume slider under the transport goes to +6 dB if you want it back.

What is the loudness target?

Set one in Settings and every piece is brought to it, measured to BS.1770-4 — the same standard broadcasters use. Quiet pieces are raised only as far as their peak allows, so nothing is squashed by a limiter. A piece that is already close to full scale stays quieter than the target, and that is correct.

The measured numbers are missing

They are measured once per file, in the background, the first time you open it. For a long multichannel file that takes a minute. SMX packages carry their numbers already, so those appear at once.

The peak is a positive number

Not a fault. It means the piece exceeds full scale in that particular mix — useful to know, and the reason the app will not raise it any further.

Files and storage

What can it play?

SMX packages (.smxd), multichannel WAV and AIFF up to 9.1.6 and 7.1.4, and ordinary MP3, WAV, AIFF and M4A. Multichannel files are folded through the same path as an object mix, without a detour through stereo.

How do I get files in?

Tap a file in the Files app, send it by AirDrop, share it from another app, or add it from the folder icon in the Library. Files you add are copied into the app so they stay available.

Where do downloads live, and can I move them?

In the app’s Media folder, visible in the Files app under saimox Player. Settings shows how much space they take and can remove them all at once.

iOS does not allow an app to keep its library on a memory card or an external drive. That is a system rule, not a decision of ours — the Android version will offer it.

I removed a download by mistake

If the piece came from an address, it stays in your playlist and can be downloaded again — nothing is lost. Files you added from your own device are gone, and the entry is marked as missing so you can point it at the file again.

Second screen

Connecting a TV or projector

Plug in by cable or pick the TV in AirPlay. The second screen fills with the view you chose in Settings — the room, the energy curve, the artwork or the numbers — while the phone stays playable. There is no switch to find; it happens by itself.

The sound went to the TV as well

iOS treats the cable as an output and takes it. Pick the output you want with the AirPlay button in the player. With a USB-C hub you can send the picture to a projector and the sound to a PA at the same time.

The picture lags behind the sound

Projectors and televisions add their own delay, typically between thirty and a hundred and fifty milliseconds. A cable is faster than AirPlay, and a projector in game mode faster than one in cinema mode. We cannot correct it without delaying the sound, which would be worse.

Licence questions, activation trouble and moving a licence to another machine: hello@saimox.com, with your licence key.

A licence runs on a limited number of machines at once. If you replaced a computer without deactivating the old one, write to us — we release it. That is not a support case, it is normal.

Privacy and accounts

There is no account. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to sign in to, nothing to lose access to.

saimox Player collects nothing: no analytics, no advertising, no identifier. It contacts a server only when you open an address yourself or download a piece you chose. The full detail is in the privacy notice.
